Another New Life

You wake up to the sound of surf, much, much closer than you've ever heard it unless you moseyed down to Puffin Pier back in the old days. What old days...? Why, the days when you had a body, of course. The memories are probably coming back by now, jumbled along with everything else you lost. What a wake-up call.

But at least the ocean is real, unlike your dubiously fragmented remembrances. This little island out in the middle of nowhere sports a crude sign reading ~~DUCK~~ DAMNED ISLAND that seems like it's really railing against whatever fate you've been left to. There are little seashells and sparkling fragments amongst the sand to the left of your face. If you look further, to the left and right, it seems you're not the only one who's woken up here; it's considerably less cushy than your last wakeup, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

Here, you're free, albeit... kind of incorporeal, as you'll soon find out. The island is covered in pretty little trees that don't quite form a forest, bowed over the really beautiful sandy beach that is way prettier than the one on the mainland. One, slightly rickety treehouse -- bare of anything, because incorporeal ghosts don't need furniture, of course -- peeks out from between the leaves. This is, apparently, your home away from home now.

Finally, there's a small bay-like area on the island that leads you to a strange-looking storm drain, marked with a symbol that's not-quite-an-apple. Stepping in will wash you alllllll the way back up to Puffin Pier, right where the sewers normally let out.

Oh, and once you step onto the mainland? You're now a duck. What kind of quacking afterlife is this.

... Since we can pass through things, does that mean we can go... See if there's an "under"?

...They said something like that those who went under never returned. We might not be able to come back if we try.

What if... we approached it from the seabed, then...?

Ah... True, we haven't tried to explore the sea like that, now that I think about it. There could be something there. [ Something about that idea worries him. ]

It's too bad we can't tether someone with a rope, or something... Though, if the rope was attached to the treehouse, do you think it'd work? [ Though that's probably too far a distance? Unsure. ]

If we had a long enough rope, it could work, but we'd need to be able to touch the rope even outside.

[ Wait a second. ]

How come the other ducks can easily bring in items while we have to ask them for help to carry stuff from town?

Yeah, that's why I was wondering if it being attached to the treehouse would work but, hmm.

... Maybe, they "forgot" themselves?

[ Yeah, that's still the most obvious answer, isn't it... ] I really hope not, but there's nothing that really disproves it right now either.

[ But on the subject of the treehouse... ]

I think the rope might be work looking into anyway. What about the treehouse makes us corporeal though? I've looked around, but I didn't see anything that screamed mystical talisman anywhere.

[ Hmm, well, something they had no time to really worry about right now. ]

Under.... Maybe something at its roots? I know it's a treehouse and not a treehouse, but... I don't suppose there's a basement to be seen...

Hmm, I haven't noticed one, but I also haven't tried to mine downwards, to be fair.

[ Sigh, he feels like he's missing something terribly obvious. ]

Downwards...downwards from the puffin's nest besides the sewers... The back entrance to JojaMart isn't downwards. The wizard tower does have a basement with this weird magic circle. The mines? [ He goes down a list in his mind, trying to remember which places have some form of downstairs area. ] I wonder what else would count as down for the puffins? They are pretty tiny.

You know I never noticed them before. ..

Also, they don't mean just like, fish, do they?

That's possible, but they were sure eating a lot of fish.

[ Sigh, there's so many things he could've done in hindsight. ]

I wish I could've asked them what they meant by "under". It would've really narrowed things down.

[ Time to rack his brain to see what else he can remember... ]

Scale is a problem, I guess. There's a lot that would be.. under birds.

And puffins can fly too.

[ There's one other idea in his head though. ]

Another thing I can think of that might fit the bill is...underneath the farm plots.

I just don't think the answer is something like moles.

If the answer is something like slimes, I'm turning in my junior detective license.

Hmmm. [ How old are you again? ] Kind of like the Detective Boys?

Right, right, like that! It'd be a fun adventure.

[ ... ] I guess, you felt like you were missing out on trying to solve all these murders, then? [ Sorry? But also, child... ]

Mm...well, I don't really feel like myself when watching trials. After those cases...

[ He frowns at the memories. Maybe this duck body had orders to follow too. ]

I'd prefer being one of the detectives looking into a phantom thief's heists.

More high adventure again? [ He wonders if Hinata would be into that but hmm no, probably not... ] But that kind of detective probably wouldn't go around hurting themselves. You should have a bigger ego if you want to go for that.
