Another New Life

You wake up to the sound of surf, much, much closer than you've ever heard it unless you moseyed down to Puffin Pier back in the old days. What old days...? Why, the days when you had a body, of course. The memories are probably coming back by now, jumbled along with everything else you lost. What a wake-up call.

But at least the ocean is real, unlike your dubiously fragmented remembrances. This little island out in the middle of nowhere sports a crude sign reading DUCK DAMNED ISLAND that seems like it's really railing against whatever fate you've been left to. There are little seashells and sparkling fragments amongst the sand to the left of your face. If you look further, to the left and right, it seems you're not the only one who's woken up here; it's considerably less cushy than your last wakeup, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

Here, you're free, albeit... kind of incorporeal, as you'll soon find out. The island is covered in pretty little trees that don't quite form a forest, bowed over the really beautiful sandy beach that is way prettier than the one on the mainland. One, slightly rickety treehouse -- bare of anything, because incorporeal ghosts don't need furniture, of course -- peeks out from between the leaves. This is, apparently, your home away from home now.

Finally, there's a small bay-like area on the island that leads you to a strange-looking storm drain, marked with a symbol that's not-quite-an-apple. Stepping in will wash you alllllll the way back up to Puffin Pier, right where the sewers normally let out.

Oh, and once you step onto the mainland? You're now a duck. What kind of quacking afterlife is this.

[ Something about this is just so offbeat that he can't help but smile a little. Maybe something's massively wrong with him for that, but it's keeping him going right now. ]

[ He's about to protest that, but shuts his mouth. Yeah, well. A lot of things about him aren't normal. The talented, kind Sora that Hinata always called him, he doesn't even know what part of it is real. Or was any of it?

...Yeah. Sometimes I wonder what it'd be like if we weren't like this. [ He twirls the pen in his fingers. That could apply to a lot of things about themselves and their lives. What kind of people they were and wanted to be. ]

Then we would have lead very different lives, most likely? [ And maybe they wouldn't be here right now, in this... duck purgatory. ]

Probably. But ever since this whole duck situation, it's become...scary to think of what could've been.

Or it could've been much better.

It could be. But it wouldn't be me. And that's sad in its own way.

[ It's not that he's trying to be pessimistic, but something about being a duck has spurred him into thinking more about their identities. ]

I don't know... I guess it's different if you're fine with yourself.

Well, I suppose I don't want to be a mindless animal either though.

I can't say I have an answer yet for all that either.

But for now, I think it's great we're all weird. And that Monopoly without money is still fun.

You did better than the test round on the duels, though. It's just those dice were mean. At least it's not... what's that game? Mario Party?

Well, I can't argue with that... [ The dice really should be exorcised or something. Anyway, he thinks he knows what that is. ]

Hmm, isn't that the one with all the competitive minigames? Some of them possibly completely rigged?

I think so. I've never played it. Hinata says he doesn't want to end friendships with me?

Haha, he has a point! I don't play it much, but it's probably even more dependent on the roll of the die than Monopoly. Somehow.

[ He holds back another laugh. ] Considering how the game went, I can see you encountering Bowser a lot.

Imagine that every time you hit those spaces, someone takes your property and makes everyone compete for it. Kind of like that.

Hmm that sounds irritating. People find that game... fun?

It evens the playing field! Sometimes. But mostly the dice is there to mess up everyone's plans.
