Another New Life

You wake up to the sound of surf, much, much closer than you've ever heard it unless you moseyed down to Puffin Pier back in the old days. What old days...? Why, the days when you had a body, of course. The memories are probably coming back by now, jumbled along with everything else you lost. What a wake-up call.

But at least the ocean is real, unlike your dubiously fragmented remembrances. This little island out in the middle of nowhere sports a crude sign reading ~~DUCK~~ DAMNED ISLAND that seems like it's really railing against whatever fate you've been left to. There are little seashells and sparkling fragments amongst the sand to the left of your face. If you look further, to the left and right, it seems you're not the only one who's woken up here; it's considerably less cushy than your last wakeup, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

Here, you're free, albeit... kind of incorporeal, as you'll soon find out. The island is covered in pretty little trees that don't quite form a forest, bowed over the really beautiful sandy beach that is way prettier than the one on the mainland. One, slightly rickety treehouse -- bare of anything, because incorporeal ghosts don't need furniture, of course -- peeks out from between the leaves. This is, apparently, your home away from home now.

Finally, there's a small bay-like area on the island that leads you to a strange-looking storm drain, marked with a symbol that's not-quite-an-apple. Stepping in will wash you alllllll the way back up to Puffin Pier, right where the sewers normally let out.

Oh, and once you step onto the mainland? You're now a duck. What kind of quacking afterlife is this.

[ Wow, don't call him out like this??? ] I was just feeling weirdly exhausted that night!

[ Still laughing, though. ] I'm sure fishing was very tiring.

Hey, it was! [ Wow, he's pouting now. ] I know those fish were pretty small for bass, but it took me a while to get the hang of it enough to catch them!

Of course. New skills take time to learn, after all.

I feel like that applies to so many things here though. [ Well, that deflates the pout at least. ] I guess that's why I got tired so much faster than usual.

I'm from the city, at least, so all this manual labor is definitely taxing. Even my parents weren't making go cultivate my own food. [ Like, he's not spoiled, but he's not a county boy... ]

Same here, actually. [ Keito, on the hand, is totally spoiled. ] Though I was in a sports club, so I probably move around a lot more than you do in art club. But that's still pretty different from farming...so yes. Taxing, all right.

Sports... That's a little unexpected from you. [ Oh right, his plaque did say something... And his letters. ] Ah, you did mention before... Not interested in literature club though?

Oh, I just got recruited to the lacrosse club first. But maybe in another timeline, I would've joined the literature club? Talking about my favorite books and learning about new ones that'd interest me is pretty fun.

[ He swiftly and mercilessly sweeps a memory unbidden to the back of his mind. ]

No. Hinata's the one who invited me there, so...

And you're fantastic at art! [ Which makes him realize... ] I guess that was a silly question, with how dedicated you are and all.

I guess if Hinata had wanted to do something else, I would've tried to follow, but he's kind...

He likes art too, right? [ 'Cause the idea of someone not liking a club and then bringing their best friend along doesn't make sense to him. ]

Yeah, but it's not like it's his only interest too. But he keeps at it in his own way.

Still, that means he's passionate about it enough to stick with it and join with you. I'd say that counts for a lot!

[ You act like he won't sit here and listen for a stupidly long time? ] So do you. You're still drawing, even in this place. It makes me a little jealous, actually.

You still write though. Unless you want to do some lacrosse? [ what is lacrosse.... ]

I wouldn't mind, but it'd probably be bad to do a contact sport in a place like this. [ He pauses a moment to think. ]

Honestly, I can't quite put my finger on why? I do admire your dedication to your craft, so maybe I was just thinking it'd be nice if I could be like that with something too. [ Could it be part of the uneasiness he feels about adulthood? ] Maybe writing, but I'm still not sure about that.

Unsure about the future? [ He's not exactly the model art student considering he's throwing it all away for... ]

The normal thing to probably say is you have all your life to figure it out, but well. Life's not that nice, right? Just enjoy what you're doing right now, and if you find something you like, go for it?

...Yeah. [ He lets out a breath he wasn't even aware he was holding. ]

I guess you're right. We don't have much else to lose at this point, so we might as well. [ But if they lose their identities... His face turns blank as he tries to process that thought. ]
