Another New Life

You wake up to the sound of surf, much, much closer than you've ever heard it unless you moseyed down to Puffin Pier back in the old days. What old days...? Why, the days when you had a body, of course. The memories are probably coming back by now, jumbled along with everything else you lost. What a wake-up call.

But at least the ocean is real, unlike your dubiously fragmented remembrances. This little island out in the middle of nowhere sports a crude sign reading DUCK DAMNED ISLAND that seems like it's really railing against whatever fate you've been left to. There are little seashells and sparkling fragments amongst the sand to the left of your face. If you look further, to the left and right, it seems you're not the only one who's woken up here; it's considerably less cushy than your last wakeup, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

Here, you're free, albeit... kind of incorporeal, as you'll soon find out. The island is covered in pretty little trees that don't quite form a forest, bowed over the really beautiful sandy beach that is way prettier than the one on the mainland. One, slightly rickety treehouse -- bare of anything, because incorporeal ghosts don't need furniture, of course -- peeks out from between the leaves. This is, apparently, your home away from home now.

Finally, there's a small bay-like area on the island that leads you to a strange-looking storm drain, marked with a symbol that's not-quite-an-apple. Stepping in will wash you alllllll the way back up to Puffin Pier, right where the sewers normally let out.

Oh, and once you step onto the mainland? You're now a duck. What kind of quacking afterlife is this.

Friday morning

[ When Sora arrived at the treehouse's entrance, he was breathing hard (unsure how though), holding onto the doorframe with his arm, trying to catch the breath that he shouldn't have. Habits maybe?

He'd stashed the knife away before he had come back here, making sure no one else could find it.

He looked up, eyes frantic, calling for the others. ] Keito-kun, Sampo-san!

[ He slumped against the doorframe, still feeling dizzy and disoriented. ]

[lovebombing]

...?

[He's poking his head out the door quizzically, and...hoo, buddy, you don't look good. He's coming over to grasp his shoulder DON'T PASS OUT PLEASE]

Are you...alright? What happened?

[ He's struggling but it's fine. ]

Adela-san, she.. She's the one who took our memories!

[lovebombing]

Excuse me?

She did... Something. I can't...

[ He should really start from the beginning. ]

[ Keito arrived a little late, still groggy from sleeping after almost an entire day up and about. But at least he hears the tail end of that conversation. ]

...Take some deep breaths. Then let's sit down.

[ He has a lot of things he wants to say, but he settles for that, pointing towards the now-decorated seating area near the entrance. ]

[ He nods at Keito and listens, sitting down where he's directed and taking some breathes before he starts. ]

So, I went to town to, well, watch. [ Don't judge. ] I saw buildings with tape on them. It was almost curfew, and the one doing it was Furodo-san.

I went to inspect, and it was duct tape. Almost all the buildings were taped up, except Jade Vine.

[ Taking a long breath. ]

So, I went to try something. I went to a building I thought they wouldn't probably try to use, Jojamart's, and used that knife I had earlier to cut it, but then...

She came from behind me. She said...

"Don't be a naughty duck."

Then, I don't know what happened. It was suddenly morning. It was so... I couldn't remember anything.

And I rushed back here...

You went go watch. [A long sigh.] Kids these days...

So you think she ambushed you and stole your memories? Memokeeper vibes, I'm telling ya!

It feels exactly like when we couldn't remember things before. Just kind of, worse.

[ He doesn't know what that is, so he's just moving past it. ]

I wonder if she is one of those Memokeepers after all...

[ He doesn't really see a need to comment on Sora's voyeur ways, since well, that's just a thing now. ]

What do you mean by "worse", Sora?

Well, it just happened quickly, so I felt very disoriented. Like my time went missing.

That's awful...and to leave you there? I'm just glad you're okay.

[ Probably weird coming from him, but well, Keito's not the type to lie about that. They should check how he is in duck form later, but he's not suggesting that until Sora gets more rest. So instead he grabs some of the post-its and starts writing a summary. ]

I don't think I came to at Jojamart though. So, whatever happened I'm missing it.

...Wait, where did you wake up?

[ He has a bad feeling about this? ]

I think it was on the other side of town...? I was more worried about getting back though...

I'm glad you made it back, but the other part's...not so good.

[ He nervously fiddles with his hands. ]

I was trying not to manifest it, but...it happened again, didn't it?

I didn't kill anyone this time.

But Adela-san is definitely the one taking our memories. [ He's sure. ]

...Glad to hear? [ He's too sleepy for this... Little ones shouldn't be stabbing with knives anyway??? ]

It's a good thing I was avoiding her and Miss Makima then... I really wanted to ask them more questions, but I guess it's too late for that.

People seem to have been getting them back, from the sounds of it after... Well, after I was executed. But if she has the powers to just do it again...
